Airplane travelers: be on alert! Germs are everywhere. In a busy airport, business travelers, families, workers, and many others rush from the check-in desk to security lines, restrooms, food courts, and on to the planes.
Now imagine the airport at a microbial level, where germs live. Everything that gets touched is teeming with bacteria, viruses, and pathogens, being picked up and passed around with each touch.
We worked with microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba to pinpoint five of the germiest places in airports. Some of these hot spots are obvious – the airplane toilet – while some are more shocking, such as onboard magazines and water fountains. Gross.
