Remember how germs and colds spread like wildfire back when you were in school? And not just among students but to the teachers and parents as well.

Every business and office building is unique, but they all have germ hotspots where colds and flu like to hang out and spread.

In no particular order, here’s a useful list of germ hot spots in schools (as well as other educational facilities such as daycares).

  • Water fountain controls
  • Doorknobs
  • Electronics (library keyboards, for example)
  • Hand rails
  • Gym equipment
  • Tops of desks and chairs
  • Soap dispenser levels

How can you get rid of, or decrease, germ spots?

  • Implement quality hand washing practices among students and staff (download our hand washing poster here)
  • Ask your current janitorial company if they focus on germ hot spots
  • Make sure the janitorial company uses up-to-date cleaning procedures

According to the ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association), 38 million school days a year are lost because of the flu. For a great infographic to illustrate how lack of infection control and sub-par cleaning can affect the school and the student body, hop over to our article, “Dirty Schools: What Are Your Children Sharing?”
