5 Traits Shared by Military Veterans and Small Business Owners

As a small business owner, you’re all in from the beginning. Your time, energy and focus make things happen. Veterans have five distinct qualities or values that carry over naturally from the military to life as a civilian and especially as a business owner.

1. Discipline
If everyone on earth had the same level of discipline as a Military Veteran, we’d all be small business owners. Well, maybe not, but you know what we mean. Running a business is much different than having a job. It requires constant attention, energy and focus in order for it to grow. Discipline is an essential ingredient to any healthy business.

2. Dedication
Dedication and discipline go in today’s business leaders. Your dedication will show in the work you perform and the loyalty of your customers.

3. Pride
Pride is the by-product of good work. When it comes to being a business owner, pride shows, and shows well, which is why it should come natural. Pride will shine through in the work performed on a daily basis, how you treat your customers and how they treat you in return. Small business owners have a deep sense of pride, not only in their work, but their culture and way of life.

4. Courage
There is a common thread amongst small business owners, entrepreneurs and Military Veterans everywhere, and that’s courage. It all starts with a single decision, which is often brought on by either a life event or the burning desire to own a business. Courage is mandatory if you plan to realize the dream of becoming a business owner.

5. Unity
Many small business owners are deeply involved in their communities. Small businesses from all industries across the country employ people from the community and support local charities as well. They stick together to help unify the communities in which they live, work and play. It’s important to stick together to help support your community. This works both ways.
